TROPICAL AND FOLIAGE HOUSEPLANTS

We offer a wide range of indoor plants, both new varieties and some of the old reliables that everyone is seeking these days. Except where noted, culture of these plants is much the same. Normal House Temperatures are fine, as much light as possible without full sun (except in Winter) and as high a humidity as can be maintained is about all they need. Use a little fertilizer every week and prune to keep in shape. DO NOT OVERWATER. Never water a plant if the top of its soil is still damp.

ABUTILON (Flowering Maple)

Known to the Victorians as "Flowering Maples". These bushy plants with maple-like foliage and bell shaped flowers make excellent houseplants. They bloom floriferously most of the year and are not bothered by the odd cool period. For best results fertilize regularly and never allow them to get dry.

A diverse group of plants that grow best in shaded but bright Locations. Humidity is a big help in producing fresh looking plants.

BOUGAINVILLEA (Paper Flower)

These plants require as much light as possible, even full Sun. They are ideal for the Greenhouse or Patio/Sunporch. The compact types can easily be grown in 4" pots. All can be displayed in Hanging Baskets, but are best planted in groups of 3 in large baskets. Prune back when finished blooming and re-pot or add fertilizer for the next cycle (if you can take cuttings at this time too).

CESTRUM

A group of Evergreen shrubs that make ideal houseplants. Flowers are all fragrant and the plants can easily be kept in shape by pruning.

CITRUS

Easy to grow group of plants that will bear fruit in the home or Greenhouse. Good air circulation, moderately warm temperatures and as much light as possible will keep them happy. Can be outside in Summer. WE HAVE ONLY VERY LIMITED QUANTIES OF THE CITRUS.

COLUMNEA

Modern hybrids are mostly ever-blooming on slender trailing stems. Grow in good light but not direct Sun and keep moist.

Commonly called "Angels Trumpet" these are one of the most striking house plants that can be grown. The flowers are large, trumpet shaped to 12" in length. The colors range from White to Red in some varieties. *NOTE THESE PLANTS ARE POISONOUS.

Give them lots of light, but no full summer sun and they will reward you with flowers to 8" in a rainbow of colors. Keep them just moist. They can be grown in pots, hanging baskets or even patio stands.

These small evergreen shrubs have neatly arranged leaves in a variety of shades and shpes and usually feature small flowering spikes. Sun or part shade, hardy outside in mild areas.

This "English Ivy" provides a vast array of different Leaf patterns. It is hard to believe they all come from the same stock.

These plants can be grown as either indoor Pot Plants or Greenhouse and Patio Plants. If you want to keep them small and well shaped just prune back after flowering. Keep moist at all times and give good light.

HOYA

Hoyas are all vining with a few exceptions and make excellent houseplants both in Pots and Baskets. They can be trained to climb if desired. A bright location is best for good bloom. Do not overwater.

Primarily Hanging Basket plants but they can be grown in pots as well. Orange, Red and yellow blooms in an unusual pouch-shaped arrangement. They need perhaps a bit more light than Violets.

NERIUM OLEANDER (Rose Bay)

Evergreen shrubs that will reach 3 or 4 feet if potted up in tubs, so make ideal Patio or sunporch plants. Can also be pruned back for Pot grown Houseplants. Long narrow leaves and upward growing.

OXALIS (Shamrock)

Mostly Green .leaved plants with Shamrock leaf shapes. These can all be multiplied by cuttings or division. Low Light and cool areas. Please e-mail us if you are interested in different varieties which may be available in very limited quantities.

Easter Cacti resemble the popular Christmas Cacti in appearance but the branch segments are more gently rounded. They normally bloom in April and May, and sometimes again in the Fall. Culture is much the same as for Christmas Cacti except they do not need to be "timed".

SCHLUMBERGERA (Thanksgiving-Christmas Cacti )

A great deal of hybridizing has been carried out on this group of plants, so if you have grown them before, expect larger blooms and easier growth on these. They will normally bloom about the same time each year but you can experiment in 2 ways. TEMPERATURE...keep night time temperatures about 55-60 F to set buds. PHOTOPERIOD ...less than 12 hours of darkness at temperatures about 60 F will initiate flower buds. Give bright filtered light and allow to dry out between waterings; however do not let them go COMPLETELY dry.

ORCHIDS
We offer a limited number of varities that are expected to do well in the same conditions as African Violets.

Phalaenopsis and Doritaenopsis
The Orchid most likely to succeed in your home is the "Moth Orchid" with its large blooms in white, cream pink or mauve. Once mature they will generally bloom at least twice a year and on fully mature plants you will have blooms almost all year. Water about twice a week in the summer, once a week in the winter. Regular fertilizing is necessary, especially from spring to fall.

Dendrobium
These can be grown side by side with the Phalaenopsis above. The flowers are smaller but more numerous. Assorted colors - Pink, Purple or 2-tone.

Paphiopedilum
These lovely "Lady Slipper" orchids have mottled green leaves and large green or burgundy blooms lasting up to 6 weeks. They are warm growing and prefer low to medium light levels, so will do well with African Violets. Water and fertilize as for Phalaenopsis.

Oncidium
The "Dancing Ladies" produce a cloud of flowers in yellow with red, burgundy or brown markings. Some varieties are fragrant. They prefer warm days and bright morning light. Do not overwater.

Zygopetalum
Sweetly scented inflorescence with 7-8 flowers in shades of green, purple or burgundy that last 4 - 8 weeks. Late winter to spring bloomer but mature plants can bloom twice a year. Low to medium light, cool nights to induce blooming. Keep moist.
